Ronald Jay Cantwell Sr., 70, of Gun Barrel City passed away peacefully after a long and well lived life on November 14th, 2023 just before 1pm. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones. R.J. was born July 5th 1953, in Hillsboro, Texas. He grew up in Pleasant Grove with his parents and 5 siblings. He worked with his father at Cantwell & Son Tire co., Cantwell & son Sand & gravel. Then with his wife they operated Cantwell Trucking from 1989 until 2008. Finally he and his son operated R&R Tire service from 2013-2018. R.J. enjoyed NASCAR, boating, fishing, working on 18 wheelers, and spending time with his family.
R.J. was predeceased by both parents, Betty Sue Lemley and Jay Lee Cantwell Sr., two sisters, Sandra Sue Garcia, Ava Jenelle Wilson, one niece, Tammy, one nephew, Lane.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Ruth Cantwell, their son, Ronald Jay Cantwell Jr., his wife Tracy Cantwell, their daughter Patricia Lim Johnson, her husband James Johnson, their daughter Katherine, his grandchildren, his lil red head-Kayla, Kaleb, Loriann, Scarlett, Dusty, Amber, John, Heaven, Jasper, great grandchildren Michael, Caden, Logan, Adalynn, Ivy, Felix, Luna, Joey, his two sisters, Glenda Elaine Phillips, Kimberly May Cantwell, his brother, Jay Lee Cantwell Jr, his wife Veronica Cantwell, 6 of his nieces and nephews, Randall, Casey Lee, Kevin, Johnathan, Maddie, Wade, and multiple great grand nieces and nephews. R.J. “Papa” will be dearly missed and always remembered.
We will have a viewing and we request all of R.J.’s loved ones join us in celebrating his beautiful life at Moorhead Funeral Home 750 E Main St, Gun Barrel City, TX 75156 on November 25th, 2023 at 2pm. On a later date we will be scattering R.J’s ashes at a spot that was meaningful for several reasons.
