Mavis Dion

January 4, 1921 — July 1, 2019

Mavis Savard Dion, age 98, was born January 4, 1921 in Quebec City, PQ, Canada, and died July 1, 2019 in Mabank, Texas.  Mavis retired from Atlantic Richfield in 1983 as a Gas Tax Accountant, but her passion was music. Hockey was a close second including singing the Canadian National Anthem at a Dallas Stars Game. Her career in music as a Lyric Coloratura spanned stage and radio from BBC Canada to WFAA in Dallas, Texas. As a longtime Dallas resident, she was a soprano with The Dallas Catholic Choir and an active parishioner and volunteer at her various parishes which she continued to love: St. Rita, Christ the King, Mary Immaculate, St Bernard, Cistercian Abby, and most recently St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Churches. Her volunteer activities also included over 16 years of service to Trinity Ministries for the Poor, a non-profit dedicated to serving the needs of the homeless. She was named their Volunteer of the Year in 2003. Mavis spoke fondly of her involvement in the Irish American Society and New Arts Six, having served as ambassador/French translator for their singing tour of France. Mavis’ children, grandchildren and her first great-grandchild were her pride and joy and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events.

Survived by children: Nanette, Rosemary, Denise (Judith Baker) and Dennis Dion (Pam) and Michelle Grimes (Lanny); grandchildren Jordan (Emily Bell), Kristen and Megan Grimes and Sophia Dion; great-granddaughter Avery Grimes; siblings James and Geraldine Savard along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.  Preceded in Death by husband Martin L Dion, grandson Christopher R Arrey; brothers Kenneth and Robert Savard and sister, Angel Davies.

Mavis was a friend to many and always made an impression with her kind heart, deep faith, zest for life and quick wit. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched.

Special thanks to Alinea Hospice and all Mavis’ caregivers for their love and tender care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mavis’ name to The Pearson Project, 14799 Fishtrap Road, Aubrey, TX 76227, a non-profit charity serving the homeless and others in need.
