Harold Newton Vanderburg, age 85, passed away on January 3, 2026, at his home in Gun Barrel City, Texas. Born on October 22, 1940, to Odell Newton Vanderburg and Gladys Chaney-Vanderburg, he was the second born of triplets. His biological mother passed away shortly after their birth, and he was lovingly raised by his father, Odell, and his wife, Mary Ella Vanderburg, who became a devoted mother to him.

Growing up, Harold attended numerous schools in Oklahoma and Arizona as his father served as a preacher and the family moved frequently. Those early years helped shape his strong morals, deep faith, and resilient work ethic.

Harold proudly served his country in the United States Army during wartime, completing nine years of service and earning an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military service was one of his proudest achievements and reflected his dedication, discipline, and sense of duty.

On January 26, 1974, Harold married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Vanderburg. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. He later retired from Safeway Grocery Warehouse after many years of dedicated service.

Known affectionately as “Sweet Pea” — whether earned through humor or sarcasm remains up for debate — he was a man with a giving heart and unwavering principles. He helped others quietly and selflessly, never seeking recognition. At the same time, if something went against his strong morals, he wouldn’t hesitate to speak his mind. If it wasn’t in “his book,” you were going to hear about it.

Harold loved family gatherings and treasured time spent with those he loved. A tireless worker, he rarely sat still, always finding something to build — whether or not it made sense to anyone else. If you happened to visit while he was working, he wouldn’t ask you to cut a 2x4; instead, he relied on the power of suggestion. Tough as nails, yet soft-hearted, he loved fiercely and completely.

One unforgettable family memory occurred in 1990, when — without warning — Harold bought a home on Cedar Creek Lake. When Dorothy came home from work to discover they were moving, she was not happy at first, but that property soon became a place they both deeply loved and called home for the rest of their lives.

Music was one of his greatest joys. He loved playing his guitars, singing, and making music with friends and family. Hearing him play remains one of the family’s most cherished memories. The smell of freshly cut wood, another favorite pastime, will forever bring him to mind.

While Harold was proud of his military accomplishments, the birth of his two children was his greatest joy. Above all, his highest and most meaningful accomplishment was giving his life to Christ.

Harold was an incredible father, a devoted husband, and a man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He truly did not have a selfish bone in his body — he would give you the shirt off his back if he believed you needed it.

Harold is survived by his son, Vann Vanderburg and his wife Cristi Vanderburg; their children Trent Brown, Jessica Lewis, and Holli Vanderburg. He is also survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hernandez, her husband Javier Hernandez, and their children Austin and McKenzie Paine. He is further survived by daughters Julianna Seabrook, Catherine Paul, and Shellina Faulk, along with their children; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister Mary Janice Hagberg; and his brothers Paul, Samuel, and Thomas Vanderburg.

Harold is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Ann Vanderburg; his parents, Odell and Mary Ella Vanderburg; his biological mother, Gladys Chaney-Vanderburg; and his brothers Ronald, Gerold, Darold, and David Vanderburg.

He will be remembered as a hardworking man of faith, a loving family man, a builder, a musician, and someone whose generosity and strength left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
