Doris J. Gibbs, age 93, passed away on June 23, 2026, in Kemp, Texas. She was born on December 24, 1932, in Bangor, Alabama to parents William Floyd and Lena Genoma (Baines) James.
Doris’s life was marked by devotion to her family and a steadfast spirit. She became a carnie at the age of 8 alongside her father. At the tender age of 15, she married Garner Crossland (GC), and soon after, she embraced the joys and responsibilities of motherhood, starting her family at 17.
Later in life, Doris’s journey led her to new beginnings. In the early 1980s, she married James Gibbs, who was truly the love of her life. Doris worked as a cook for Grove Restaurant for 30 years.
Doris had many passions in life. Her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was the center of them all. She loved her babies. Doris enjoyed playing gin rummy and Yahtzee. Her hobbies were crocheting, coloring and embroidering. Doris loved to feed everyone. Doris faced every chapter with courage and dignity, her quiet wisdom and kindness touching those around her. While details of her day-to-day journey are woven into the memories of those fortunate enough to have known her.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, William James and Lena Reno; son, Roland Crossland; 1 grandson; 1 great-grandson; and brother, William James.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Sharon Miller of Kemp, Texas; son, Jimmy Crossland of Kemp, Texas; daughter, Linda Mitchell of Kemp, Texas; daughter, Lena Heine and husband Jim Crow of Peeltown, Texas; daughter, Kathy Hill of Deltona, Florida; son Larry Hill of Dallas, Texas; son, Charles Hill of Huntsville, Texas; 11 grandkids; 37 great-grandkids; 22 great great-grandkids; 1 great-great-great-grandkid on the way; and niece, Sharon James; as well as numerous family, friends, and loved ones.
