Donald Gene Garrett, age 78, of Payne Springs, Texas, passed away on April 20, 2026. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 28, 1947, to parents E.C. and Shirley (Boren) Garrett.
Don’s education journey started at H. Grady Spruce High School in Dallas, Texas, and continued at the United States Marine Boot Camp in San Diego, California, from which he graduated in 1966 as part of Platoon 206. These experiences shaped the man who was both hard-headed and stubborn yet deeply loving—a protector of his family and a steady, calming presence to friends.
After proudly serving in the United States Marine Corps, where he earned numerous honors including the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal 60, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and two Purple Hearts, Don was honorably discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal. His time in service was a testament to his resilience and commitment, qualities that carried through into every phase of his life.
Following his military service, Don took on the role of a cab driver before venturing into entrepreneurship with his own limousine service. This chapter eventually led to a partnership with Don Hickson in co-founding a construction company where Don worked as a General Contractor until his retirement. Even in retirement, Don stayed active and involved, volunteering as a Marshall for the Pinnacle Golf Club, combining his love of golf with community service.
Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed early morning dove hunts in Collinsville alongside his brother, daughter, and in-laws. He embraced the freedom of the open road on his Harley, riding through East Texas. Mornings frequently began with breakfast at Kamman’s in Log Cabin alongside his “grumpy old men” group, and evenings were often spent in his workshop shooting pool or playing darts with family and friends. Quiet nights at home watching action-thriller movies with his wife Brenda were another cherished routine, as was spending meaningful time visiting his brother Tommy. His affection for animals, including some of the more unconventional kinds, showed a softer side beneath his tough exterior.
Don’s family was his greatest source of pride and joy. He delighted in watching his children grow and build their lives, celebrating their graduations, weddings, and milestones with enthusiasm that far surpassed any recognition he sought for himself. For Don, their achievements stood as his proudest accomplishments.
Some of the most treasured memories shared by his family are those peaceful times spent on the front porch around the holidays—playing guitar, swapping stories, and watching the sunset on the lake. These simple moments reflected the heart of a man who found joy in life’s everyday pleasures and in the company of those he loved.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, E.C. and Shirley Garrett; son, Donnie Garrett; daughter, Kristen Garriott ; and grandson, Brian Allen.
Don is survived by his wife, Brenda Garrett of Mabank, Texas; daughter, Stephanie Garrett and husband Mark Allen of Stuttgart, Arkansas; step-son, Jason Rhodes and wife Toni Rhodes of Brownsboro, Texas; daughter, Traci Chang and husband Derek Chang of Flower Mound, Texas; and brother, Thomas Garrett of Palestine, Texas; as well as numerous other family, friends, and loved ones.
