Obituary

Billy Joe Barnett, 95, of Mabank, Texas, passed away on February 21, 2026. Billy was born on April 17, 1930, to Roy and Janie Mae (Hinkle) Barnett, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Billie Joe was married to the love of his life, Billie Sue, for over 70 years, a testament to enduring partnership and shared life experiences. His grandchildren recall fond memories of daddy Bill taking them on walks around the subdivision, treating them to cookies or ice cream, swimming in the lake, or giving rides wherever they needed to go. These moments were simple yet deeply cherished. His son-in-law, Jim, was not only family but also his running buddy, sharing companionship beyond the usual. His family held a special place in his heart.

A proud graduate of Grand Prairie, Texas, Bill spent much of his professional life serving as an administrator at Swisher Memorial Hospital in Tulia, Texas, and Little River Memorial Hospital in Ashdown, Arkansas. Later, he retired from the Henderson County Appraisal District in Athens, Texas, closing a fulfilling chapter of public service.

Before his career in administration, Bill served his country in the Air Force, a commitment that reflected his deep sense of responsibility and honor.

Bill was known for being very outgoing. He always made time to stop and visit wherever he was, and his friendly nature meant he was loved by many. A lively spirit, even into his mid-90s, Bill remained active —he played golf, maintained his yard with raking, mowing, and weedeating, and kept driving, shopping, and exercising regularly. One of his favorite routines was meeting with his coffee buddies at McDonald’s a few times a week, a simple pleasure he genuinely looked forward to.

Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Billie Sue Barnett; parents, Roy Vernon and Janie Mae Barnett; father-in-law and mother-in-law, C.L. (Pete) and Syble Thomas; and sisters, Bartennia Odell and Joyce Pedigo.

Bill is survived by his son, Randal Joe Barnett and wife Faye of Payne Springs, Texas; daughter, Sherie Ann Sarff and husband Jim of Payne Springs, Texas; granddaughter, Brooke Ashley Barnett and husband Ethan of Payne Springs, Texas; grandson, Cody Randal Barnett and wife Melissa of Payne Springs, Texas; grandson, Alexaner Thomas Adams and wife Christine of Payne Springs, Texas; granddaughter, River Jordan and husband Hayden of Gun Barrel City, Texas; great-grandsons, Eli Isaac Branett, Ryker Lee Barnett, and Witten Rhys Barnett, all of Payne Springs, Texas; great-granddaughter, Azalea Rhea Rose Jordan of Gun Barrel City, Texas; and great-grandson Jasper Lee Jordan of Gun Barrel City, Texas; as well as numerous other family, friends, and loved ones.
